In discharging its important and sacred responsibility to seek a Bishop for your Diocese, it followed a well-established process, rooted in prayer, worship and quiet reflection. It was not simply a gathering of individuals chosen to carry out a purely administrative task.

According to the provisions of the Constitution of the Church in Wales, the right to fill the vacancy of the office of Bishop of your Diocese now rests with the Bench of Bishops. I write to assure you that, before exercising this right, the Bench will embark upon a process of consultation across the Church in Wales in order to ensure that we are able to consider a variety of both men and women thought to be suitable for appointment as your next Bishop. In common with others, you will soon hear more about that process.

During the continuing vacancy, I, as Senior Bishop of the Church in Wales, remain responsible for oversight of the spiritualities of Diocese of Llandaff and, for most purposes, I ensure that this responsibility is fulfilled through Bishop David Wilbourne, Archdeacon Peggy Jackson and Archdeacon Christopher Smith who are my Commissaries for the Archdeaconries of Margam, Llandaff and Morgannwg respectively. Bishop David will continue to fulfil agreed episcopal engagements. However, if the need arises for you to contact me directly, please feel free to do so.

With my love, prayers and very best wishes.

New Bishop of Llandaff will be elected soon

http://www.stpeterschurchfairwater.org.uk/latest-news/new-bishop-of-llandaff-will-be-elected-soon

http://www.stpeterschurchfairwater.org.uk/latest-news/new-bishop-of-llandaff-will-be-elected-soon#comments

Uncategorized

The doors of Llandaff Cathedral will be locked for up to three days this month as a new bishop is elected for Wales’ most populated diocese. An electoral college of 47 people drawn from all over Wales, including all the Welsh bishops, will meet inside to nominate and vote on a confidential list of candidates for the next Bishop of Llandaff. The election follows the retirement at the end of January of Dr Barry Morgan, who served as Bishop of Llandaff, as well as Archbishop of Wales. The new bishop will be the 72nd Bishop of Llandaff, a diocese which serves nearly half the population of Wales as it includes most of Cardiff, the South Wales Valleys and the Vale of Glamorgan.
The Electoral College is made up of representatives from all six Welsh dioceses. The “home” diocese is represented by six lay people and six clergy, and the other five dioceses by three lay people and three clergy each, plus the five remaining Bishops.
Its discussions are confidential. Candidates for election are nominated at the meeting, discussed and voted on by ballot. Any candidate receiving two-thirds of the votes of those present is declared Bishop-Elect. Otherwise, the College returns to the nomination stage and the cycle starts afresh. Once a decision is made, the Cathedral is unlocked and an announcement made at the west door.
The College may meet for up to three consecutive days in order to reach a decision; if it is unable to do so within this deadline the decision passes to the Bench of Bishops.
Once a bishop is elected, he or she will have up to 28 days to accept the position. It was officially launched at Showcase Cinema, Nantgarw on Wednesday, October 19, at 7pm.

Llandaff Diocesan youth officer, the Revd Dr Sarah Rogers said, “This is a vital new discipleship training resource and what better place to launch it than a cinema where it can receive the big screen treatment.

“In Llandaff we are always looking for different and new ways to offer training and these short films can be used in small groups to provide a platform for questions and discussions about faith. It is ideal to be used as a resource for young people but could be used by groups of people of any age.”

The aim of Twelve is not to give answers but to start discussion and debate around faith and living. Many of those whose stories are featured are due to attend the launch.

Dr Morgan said, “These 12 short films offer a compelling and creative way to explore questions about our faith. The stories behind each one are unique and powerful yet they raise questions most of us have had at some point in our lives. I am sure the DVD will become a valuable resource for discussion groups, challenging and inspiring us to seek out answers.”

Twelve is joint venture between the dioceses of Llandaff, Monmouth and Swansea and Brecon. The 12 people featured in the films show how their questions come out of their experiences as Christians, and the films show how their questions have shaped their lives.

If you'd like to find out more - click here

Good News for Hall

http://www.stpeterschurchfairwater.org.uk/latest-news/good-news-for-hall

http://www.stpeterschurchfairwater.org.uk/latest-news/good-news-for-hall#comments

Uncategorized

St Peter's is celebrating after being awarded nearly £324,000 to transform its community hall into a more flexible centre. The refurbishment of St Peter’s Community Hall, Fairwater, Cardiff, is one of eight projects across Wales benefiting from the Welsh Governments’ Community Facilities Programme. The money will be spent dividing the large hall into a flexible space which could house four groups at a time.

The new hall will complement the adjoining community garden which recently won a Green Flag Award from the National Garden Scheme. The hall and gardens are used by a variety of groups including Communities First, Rookwood Brain Injury Unit and the children in the adjacent primary school.

Father Colin Sutton, Vicar of Fairwater, says he is delighted with the news which was announced by the Communities and Children Minister Carl Sargeant at the hall today (July 27).

He says, “This has taken more than two years to achieve and a lot of work from the Focus Group, and support from a large number of people-from the Church and the community, who have shared our vision. We have made it through – now a different kind of work begins to help us serve the community with both a more flexible hall and developing gardens. Our thanks go to all who have helped in any way.”

As part of the refurbishment, the hall’s stage will be converted into a community garden rest room or training room. The kitchen will open out both into the hall and meeting room and through a hatch out onto the patio.

Mr Sargeant says,“The £2.6m I have announced today is set to breathe new life into these buildings and will help ensure they help to play a valuable role in improving the lives of the people who use them.

“These projects truly are the heart of their communities, providing a huge range of important services, to young and old and space for groups to come together. The funding will enable these projects to expand their work further, throwing open their doors to even more people in the local community.”

The photo below shows Cabinet Secretary Carl Sargeant looking at the plans for improving the building and facilities.
