1. Loaves of Bread
Frescoes in 2nd- and 3rd-century catacombs reveal how early Christians symbolized communion. The most common symbol was a table holding seven loaves of bread. As with the Seven Deadly Sins, the seven sacraments and the Seven Fruits of the Holy Spirit, the number seven represented completeness. The loaves represented the bread that was shared during worship that was believed to assume the essence of Christ's body as well as the miraculous multiplication of loaves.
